It has been reported that families need to earn a third more than they did in 2008 to live within “social norms”. A couple with 2 children are said to need a minimum income of £36,800 before tax to live, with a single parent with 1 child needing to earn £23,900, a single person needing £16,400, and pensioner couples £12,000 each.
